Player Composition and Positioning
⚖️ Balanced Party Structure
A well-rounded group should ideally include:
🛡️ Front-liners (2): Fighters, Barbarians, Paladins — hold the line, absorb hits, and protect allies.
🎯 Ranged Damage (1+): Skirmishers (Rogue), marksmen (Ranger), or spell slingers (Wizard, Sorcerer, Warlock).
🎵 Support / Utility (1+): Cleric, Bard, or Druid to heal, buff, and control the battlefield.
⚔️ The goal: balance offensive flexibility with defensive staying power.
📏 General Rules of Thumb
❤️ Constitution & Survivability: At least half the party should lean on Constitution (HP, concentration, frontline tanking).
🪄 Early-Level Crowd Control: Low-level spells that swing encounters:
🌱 Entangle (Druid): Restrains groups, shuts down movement.
🌧️ Hail of Thorns (Ranger): Spreads damage at range.
😴 Sleep (Wizard, Sorcerer, Bard): Devastating against low-HP mobs.
🗺️ Combat Movement & Positioning
↔️ Spacing: Stay 10 ft (2 squares) apart to avoid AoE blasts (fireball, breath, etc.).
🛡️ Front-liners: Anchor the middle, blocking enemy advance.
🚶 Movement Through Allies:
Counts as difficult terrain (double movement).
You cannot end your turn in an ally’s space.
🎯 Positioning Strategy
In Combat:
🪓 Tanks → front line.
🎯 Ranged & casters → maintain line of sight, use cover.
🗡️ Skirmishers → flank for mobility + opportunistic strikes.
Out of Combat (Marching Order):
🚨 Front: Durable + high Perception/Darkvision (trap spotting).
🎓 Middle: Squishy casters and ranged.
🐾 Back: A secondary durable/mobile ally to guard rear.
🐾 Scouting
Scouts should go ahead alone or with light backup.
Ideal traits:
👀 Darkvision (no torches to give you away).
🕶️ Stealth proficiency (to remain undetected).
🏃 High mobility (Rogue, Monk, Ranger).
🧱 Cover Rules
Cover grants bonuses to AC and Dex saves vs. attacks that pass through it:
🪨 Half Cover: +2 AC & Dex saves.
🛡️ Three-Quarters Cover: +5 AC & Dex saves.
🚫 Total Cover: Cannot be targeted directly.
👥 Using Allies as Cover
Allies provide half cover if directly between you and the attacker.
📐 Rule of thumb: if a line from attacker → you passes through ally → you have half cover.
🎵 Best for protecting fragile allies (Clerics, Bards, Wizards).
